Often, preachers and Bible class teachers neglect the Old Testament because it is “nailed to the Cross.” Although they will admit that the Hebrew Scriptures are given for our learning, rarely do they go there except to cite a few proof texts. We understand where they are coming from, being of a similar mindset at one point in our lives, but we must take full advantage of all the Bible has to offer by bringing in the Hebrew Scriptures whenever the context permits. We do just that in this examination of John 4 by returning to such passages as Isaiah 44 and Ezekiel 40ff to bring out the Old Testament background to the themes of the temple, the water, and the Spirit.
