In continuation of our study of Revelation titled “Who Is This Babylon”?, we focus on the Exodus motif from chapter 15. The Exodus is being reenacted through the church though yet on a spiritual level.
Revelation 11:8 – Sodom & Egypt
Egypt conjures up ideas of bondage and immorality. These writings were notable in Paul’s reference to Egypt, particularly in Galatians. Paul refers to Hagar, the Egyptian, a reference directly related to Egypt and bondage. Modern readers fail to recognize the impact of how the Hebraic reader would read and interpret the book. In the O.T. the only way the name Sodom is applied spiritually to a city is to Jerusalem. The evidence from Isaiah chapter 1, Ezekiel 16 and Deuteronomy 32 is compelling.
Revelation is about Israel’s Last Days
Israel’s temple, priesthood, alters and city, i.e. everything counted dear, central to her and identified by her, were 100 percent destroyed. This is proof positive that Israel was in her last days. Deut. 32 tells us twice that its message is about Israel’s last days. Moses emphatically states that the vine of Israel was called Sodom.
The City Where The Lord Was Crucified
This means the book of Revelation is about Israel’s old covenant days and consummation. As in Galatians Paul establishes in clear language that the Old Covenant was symbolized by Hagar and on the verge of being cast out. Why would the Holy Spirit use the terms Sodom and Egypt to describe Rome? Yes, Rome was very immoral but it was not the Harlot nor ever in relation to the Lord as wife.
Whatever influenced the designation of Rome as Babylon was influenced by the Rabbis, but only after the destruction of Jerusalem. It was a Rabbinic book and sort of reactionary stance of the Rabbis.
